This iconic modern farmhouse...
...at 609 South Grove Avenue, is an American hometown treasure, appealing to the eye and rich in story. The exceptional renovation design and historic preservation was effected by the Glen Ellyn architect, Jamie Simoneit, of Z+O, Architecture. After almost two years traversing Barrington’s Architectural Review Committee, the house design fully harmonizes the elements of white cedar siding, galvalume metal roofing, heavy Amish custom woodworking and trim, white Carrera marble, dusty red brick, and an amazingly functional huge industrial kitchen. It’s wrap-around front porch is an inviting, stand-out in the neighborhood. Located on a charming tree-lined street, the home is situated on the largest residential lot in the Village of Barrington giving it a unique spacious yard with plenty of fresh air, sunlight, and room for outdoor entertaining.
Originally constructed in 1875, the house was completely taken down to studs in 2004 for a full refurbishing, expansion, and modernization. During the renovation the Shoults family rented a nearby home in Barrington so their three kids could start school and begin building relationships that have lasted into their college years. This home has been a foundation of consistency for their family.
Many rich memories have colored the Shoults family's journey in this house and in this community. There were cold winter morning walks with neighbors and kids and coffee cups down to Hough Street Elementary School, and years of surprise and delight when they had to run out for more candy as the energy of Halloween families kept coming and coming. The fun of bright-eyed 10 year olds at baseball tryouts and the thrill of Barrington High School basketball and volleyball. There have been middle school graduation parties under a tent in the driveway, Filly football practice plays run in the backyard, prom pictures taken and so many times of summer solitude out on the front porch. Cocktail parties, 50th birthday celebrations, formal dinners and casual wine tasting on the patio with good friends, this house has been lived in, shared with others, and loved well.
Homeowners, Kevin and Lori Shoults, the driving force behind this astounding one-of-a-kind home, have harmonized classic farmhouse elements with the timeless appeal of modern industrial style. The excellence in interior design spans from baseboard to cornice; over 5,000 square feet, five bedrooms, a 2 1/2 car tandem detached garage, second floor elegant laundry room, four brick fireplaces, stainless steel appliances, A/V details tailored to entertaining, ample storage space, and a fully finished bright comfortable basement. The elements presented intentionally complement each other with simplicity and harmony throughout.
Landscape Architect Bill Ferguson has preserved the clean lines and simplicity of the American farmhouse design by using predominantly boxwood hedges and Eastern knock-out roses, along with compact yews and Korean spice viburnum. The home's expansive backyard boasts a massive beautiful black walnut tree as part of an outdoor space featuring a regal stone patio, outdoor fireplace, and built-in Wolf outdoor grill. The innovative and aesthetic log holder is a unique design by the homeowner, Kevin Shoults.
